Music
Our school has a huge passion for music and this is evident in the variety of lessons and performances that we take part in. We have a dedicated music room where all classes in key stage one and key stage two, receive a weekly one hour lesson from our specialist music teacher.
Lessons are planned around the year group topic and pupils are given opportunities to develop their singing, playing and composing skills. They also regularly listen to and appraise a variety of music, including their own and others work.
We celebrate pupils effort and achievement through our 'Magnificent Musician' awards. At the end of each term a pupil from each class is selected and named as a 'Magnificent Musician'.

Furthering Talent
West Blatchington Primary & Nursery School has been selected, along with only one other school in Brighton & Hove, to be flag bearers in the Furthering Talent programme.
This means our children receive subsidised tuition towards music lessons and workshops which build towards additional performances a musical venues across the city.
Curriculum
Every class has a weekly one hour music lesson. Lessons are planned around the year group topic and pupils are given opportunities to develop their singing, playing and composing skills. They also regularly listen to and appraise a variety of music, including their own and others work. Pupils receiving instrumental tuition are always encouraged to bring their own instrument, as they are incorporated into the lessons.
Instrumental Lessons
Over 17% of pupils at our school take instrumental lessons each week. This is above average for both Brighton and Hove Music and Arts and nationally!
Brighton and Hove Music and Arts offer the following instrumental lessons at our school:
- Flute and Recorder
- Violin
- Guitar
- Drum kit

Soundmakers
As part of the music curriculum, Year 5 participate in a 10 week Soundmakers programme where they learn the cello. Sessions are delivered by a cello teacher frm Brighton and Hove Music and Arts. At the end of the 10 weeks, pupils perform to their friends and family in a special assembly.
Orchestra
We run a school orchestra which is open to all pupils who are currently learning an instrument. We also perform at the school Winter Celebration each December.
Junior Choir
Our joyful Junior Choir regularly performs throughout the year and also performs annually at the Brighton and Hove Schools Christmas Concert at the Brighton Centre.
Funky Monkeys Choir
Funky Monkeys Choir is open to all pupils in Years 1 and 2. We recently perform at both our Harvest Assembly and the Winter Celebration.
Singing Assembly
Pupils take part in a weekly singing assembly, where they learn a variety of songs. We LOVE singing at West Blatchington Primary School!

Community
We also love performing to the wider community. One key example of this was when we got to take part in a very special project for the Rugby World Cup, when the tournament visited our city. Over 250 children from Brighton & Hove joined together to sing 'Shining Brighter'. The song was made up of lyrics and actions created by the children, including a very catchy section named 'Lions' created by the Year 6 children from West Blatchington Primary & Nursery School. It was a fantastic event and was thoroughly enjoyed by the children as well as the large crowds which gathered to watch.
Ten Pieces
Year 4 responded creatively to Holst's Mars. They listened to and discussed the piece and drew pictures to reflect the scene that Holst descrined with his music. The children then went on to compose their own Mighty Martian Ostinatos using Mars-themed sentences to develop their repeating patterns. They performed their ostinatos using percussion, clapping and their voices.

Relating Week
We have been having great fun in music throughout Relating Week! KS2 children composed lyrics to reflect the Relating Learning hero and we set them to the melody of 'Happy'.
